Chennai: Amid the ongoing language dispute in Tamil Nadu, pro-Tamil activists on Sunday defaced Hindi inscriptions on nameplates at two railway stations in the state, sources confirmed.
Accusing the central government of imposing Hindi in the state, activists blackened the Hindi names of locations on railway station boards. A widely circulated video showed workers painting over the Hindi text of "Pollachi Junction." However, officials later restored the original signage.
"The Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Pollachi has identified the suspects. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Railway Act, and legal action will be taken against them," the Palakkad division of Southern Railway stated on social media, adding that the signboards were promptly restored.
A similar incident was reported in Tirunelveli district, where DMK workers defaced the Hindi inscription on the nameplate of Palayankottai railway station. Officials confirmed that the RPF had registered cases against six party workers under relevant sections of the Railway Act.
The ruling DMK has been at loggerheads with the BJP-led central government over the alleged imposition of Hindi, particularly through the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The central government, however, has refuted these claims.
