Dublin: A notorious gangland figure in his 50s has been arrested following a dramatic late-night chase in the city centre, sources have confirmed.
The suspect was one of two men seen acting suspiciously in a car on Marrowbone Lane around 10 PM on Wednesday, when officers on an anti-gang crime patrol attempted to stop the vehicle. Instead of complying, the two men fled on foot.
Officers identified one of the men as a serious criminal with a history of violent offences and pursued him. He was taken into custody, while the second suspect managed to escape.
Sources suggest the arrested man is a known gun-for-hire with an extensive criminal past, including shooting at gardaà and threatening officers with a firearm in separate incidents. Gardaà believe the suspects were either transporting a firearm or en route to carry out a hit.
Confirming the arrest, a Garda spokesperson stated:
"Gardaà have arrested a man following the search of a vehicle in Dublin 8 on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Shortly before 10 PM, a car failed to stop when directed by Gardaà on patrol. The suspect was subsequently apprehended and found in possession of a suspected firearm and ammunition. He is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in the Dublin Metropolitan Region."
The seized firearm and ammunition are undergoing forensic analysis by the Ballistics Section of the Garda Technical Bureau.
The suspect can be held for up to 72 hours as the investigation continues.
