Prayagraj, February 17, 2025 – Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh has highlighted the successful management of public health and sanitation at the Mahakumbh Mela 2025, attributing it to advanced nuclear technology. Speaking about the unprecedented scale of the event, Dr. Singh stated that over 50 crore devotees participated in the festival, yet no major health concerns were reported—an achievement made possible through cutting-edge wastewater treatment systems.
Nuclear-Driven Wastewater Treatment Ensures Hygiene
To maintain sanitation and prevent waterborne diseases, an advanced Hybrid Granular Sequencing Batch Reactor (hgSBR) system has been deployed. Developed indigenously by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), these wastewater treatment plants played a crucial role in ensuring clean water supply and effective sewage management.
The technology, pioneered by Dr. Venkat Nanjarayya of DAE, treats 1.5 lakh liters of wastewater per day using microbial purification. These fecal sludge treatment plants, installed along the banks of the Ganga River, offer a cost-effective and space-efficient solution, eliminating the need for extensive infrastructure.
Transformation in Sanitation Infrastructure
Historically, large religious gatherings such as the Kumbh Mela were prone to outbreaks of cholera, diarrhea, and other waterborne diseases. However, the Uttar Pradesh government, in collaboration with scientific and environmental agencies, has implemented major infrastructural upgrades:
- 1.5 lakh public toilets have been constructed.
- 11 permanent and three temporary sewage treatment plants have been installed to ensure proper waste management.
- 200 automatic water dispensing machines have been deployed for clean drinking water distribution.
Experts assert that these modern treatment plants outperform conventional systems, providing significant public health benefits and ensuring a safer environment for millions of pilgrims.
Mahakumbh 2025: The Largest Spiritual Gathering in the World
The Mahakumbh Mela, often described as the world’s largest religious gathering, spans 4,000 hectares along the Ganges River. Initially, authorities anticipated a footfall of 40 crore pilgrims, but the event has already witnessed participation from over 50 crore devotees. The festival will continue until February 26, 2025, with pilgrims taking the holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
By integrating scientific advancements with traditional spiritual practices, this year’s Mahakumbh Mela sets a global benchmark for sustainable event management, reinforcing India's commitment to cleanliness, public health, and environmental conservation.
