New Delhi, : OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has lauded India as an incredible market for artificial intelligence (AI) and acknowledged the country’s rapid adoption of OpenAI’s technology. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times Editor-in-Chief R. Sukumar, Altman revealed that OpenAI’s user base in India has tripled in the last year, making it the company’s second-largest market after the United States.
On India's AI Strategy and Frontier Models
Altman addressed his previous remarks about India’s role in developing frontier AI models, which had sparked controversy during his last visit. He clarified that the AI landscape has evolved significantly since then.
"That was in a different context when frontier models were extremely expensive to develop. Now, the paradigm has shifted, and they can be built at significantly lower costs. Given the pace of innovation in India, I believe the country is well-positioned to build great models," he stated. Altman expressed confidence in India's AI roadmap, describing it as a “great plan” and reaffirming OpenAI’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the country.
OpenAI's Infrastructure Plans for India
When asked whether OpenAI plans to establish AI infrastructure in India—similar to its SoftBank-backed initiatives in the US—Altman remained non-committal but hinted at future developments.
"We don’t have anything to announce today, but we are hard at work and hope to have something exciting to share soon," he said.
As India continues to strengthen its AI capabilities, OpenAI’s growing interest in the region underscores the country’s strategic importance in the global AI ecosystem.
