Vatican City, February 20 – Pope Francis, 88, is showing "slight improvement" as he continues to receive treatment for pneumonia in both lungs, the Vatican announced on Thursday. The pontiff remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has been under medical supervision since February 14 following a bout of bronchitis that worsened.
According to a Vatican spokesperson, Pope Francis is alert, breathing on his own, and maintaining his characteristic sense of humor. Despite his illness, he was able to get out of bed, eat breakfast sitting in an armchair, and even make phone calls. Recent blood tests have also shown modest signs of progress.
‘He Hasn’t Lost His Proverbial Sense of Humor’
Confirming that the pope is not on a ventilator, Vatican officials noted that he has been moving around his hospital room and continuing to work on paperwork.
On Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the ailing pontiff and later described him as "alert and responsive." According to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the pope even joked about people placing bets on his health, with Meloni remarking that he "hasn’t lost his proverbial sense of humor."
A Complex Medical Picture
The Vatican acknowledged that Francis’ condition remains serious, given his advanced age and recent health struggles. In a statement, officials said, "Laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture."
Despite these concerns, the pope remains in good spirits and has expressed gratitude for the global outpouring of prayers and well wishes.
Pope Francis has faced multiple health challenges in recent years, including surgery for an intestinal condition and recurring respiratory issues. While his current illness is being closely monitored, Vatican sources suggest he is responding well to treatment and remains hopeful for a steady recovery.
