Prime Minister Narendra Modi Takes Holy Dip at Triveni Sangam During Maha Kumbh Mela

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a sacred ritual at Prayagraj’s Triveni Sangam during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. Dressed in a saffron jacket and track pants, with a ‘rudraksha mala’ in hand, the Prime Minister offered prayers to Goddess Ganga, underscoring his deep reverence for India’s spiritual traditions.

In light of the Prime Minister’s visit, a high-security alert has been issued across the city, as thousands of devotees continue to take ritualistic dips at the confluence round the clock. During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to offer prayers at the revered temple of Lord Hanuman in his reclining form, as well as at the sacred ‘Akshayvat.’ Reports indicate that his visit to the city will last approximately two hours. Security measures have been significantly heightened in the Arail region, with designated officials overseeing arrangements across the five main zones of the Kumbh Mela: Jhunsi, Parade, Sangam, Teliyarganj, and Arail.

This marks Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Prayagraj since December 13, 2024, when he laid the foundation stone for 167 development projects worth ₹5,500 crore.

Significance of February 5 for the Holy Dip

While key auspicious dates such as Basant Panchami and Mauni Amavasya are traditionally preferred for taking a holy dip during Kumbh, February 5 holds particular spiritual significance. This day coincides with Magh Ashtami, an auspicious occasion in the Hindu calendar associated with penance, devotion, and acts of charity.

Unprecedented Security Arrangements

According to local reports, the areas included in the Prime Minister’s itinerary have been secured under the direct supervision of the National Security Guard (NSG). A comprehensive security apparatus comprising magistrates, Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed, particularly around the Ganga ghats and key access points leading to Kumbh Nagari. Thorough security checks are being conducted for all visitors entering the festival grounds.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will accompany the Prime Minister during the visit, as he had during the recent visits of Home Minister Amit Shah, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to the Maha Kumbh. Several state government ministers will also be present.

Commitment to Cultural and Spiritual Heritage

Mela Officer Vijay Kiran Anand confirmed that all preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit have been completed. "Five magistrates and a significant police force have been deployed. The Prime Minister will offer prayers to Maa Ganga after taking a holy dip at the Sangam," he stated.

This visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the 2019 Kumbh Mela, during which he not only took a ritualistic dip but also washed the feet of sanitation workers in a gesture of humility and service.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), this visit aligns with his ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting India’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Over the years, his administration has proactively undertaken initiatives to enhance infrastructure and facilities at key pilgrimage sites across the country, ensuring a more enriching experience for devotees.
