Severe Weather Expected Across Ireland as Stormy Conditions Develop

Dublin, Ireland – February 20: Ireland is set to experience increasingly unsettled weather conditions beginning Sunday, with gale-force winds, heavy rain, and a heightened risk of flooding. In anticipation of the deteriorating conditions, Met Éireann is expected to issue severe weather warnings within the next 24 hours.

Weather Experts Warn of Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

Meteorologist Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has cautioned the public about the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning strikes. “Very heavy showers are expected on Thursday morning, bringing a risk of thunderstorms, localized intense downpours, and sudden strong gusts,” O’Reilly stated on social media platform X. “Conditions will gradually improve with good sunny spells in the afternoon, though winds will ease only slowly.”

Reflecting on recent weather patterns, O’Reilly noted, “It was a noisy night with heavy rain moving across the country. While this morning is mild, stronger winds and additional rainfall are expected tonight, particularly in the southwest.”

Kenneth Conlon of Donegal Weather Channel echoed these concerns, warning of “very active thunderstorms” and “some very heavy convective showers” across the west, north, and midlands on Thursday morning. He also highlighted the potential for isolated tornadoes in regions experiencing organized thunderstorms, as well as sudden weather shifts and hail.

Met Éireann National Outlook: Unsettled Conditions Ahead

  • Friday Night: Largely dry and clear, with occasional showers in Atlantic coastal areas. Temperatures will drop to 4–7°C, accompanied by moderate southwest winds.

  • Saturday: A bright day with long sunny spells and only a few passing showers, mainly in the west and northwest. Highs of 10–12°C with moderate southwest winds. Cloud cover will increase overnight, bringing rain and strong to gale-force southerly winds after midnight. Overnight lows of 5–8°C.

  • Sunday: A wet and windy morning, with heavy rain moving across the country. Rain will gradually clear eastward in the afternoon, followed by scattered showers. Strong to gale-force southwest winds will persist, with temperatures ranging from 11–14°C.

  • Monday: Fresh and blustery conditions with sunny spells and widespread showers, some of which may be heavy with hail and thunder. Highs of 6–10°C in fresh and gusty west-to-southwest winds.

As Ireland braces for another round of turbulent weather, residents are advised to stay informed through Met Éireann updates and exercise caution in affected areas.
