Son of Hurling Icon Davy Fitzgerald Pleads Guilty to €35,000 Bank Theft

Colm Fitzgerald, son of renowned hurling figure Davy Fitzgerald, has pleaded guilty to the theft of €35,000 in cash from a bank.

The 27-year-old, residing in Castlequinn, Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare, admitted to seven counts of theft, each involving €5,000, from the Bank of Ireland branch located in the Shannon Industrial Estate, Co. Clare. The offenses occurred between May 26, 2023, and July 13, 2023.

Mr. Fitzgerald appeared before Ennis District Court on Wednesday morning, where he formally entered guilty pleas before Judge Alec Gabbet.

During the proceedings, Judge Gabbet issued an alibi warning, advising the accused of his right to reconsider his plea. However, the judge remarked that a change of plea was unlikely, given the nature of the charges before the court.

Following the hearing, Mr. Fitzgerald was remanded on continuing bail, with the case set to proceed to Ennis Circuit Court next Thursday.

The charges brought against Mr. Fitzgerald fall under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.

A well-known member of the Sixmilebridge hurling community, Mr. Fitzgerald previously played under his father and later moved into management, overseeing the club's minor team in 2021 with his father as part of the backroom staff.

His father, Davy Fitzgerald, a highly regarded hurling manager and television personality on Ireland’s Fittest Family, recently stepped down as Waterford hurling manager after two seasons in charge. In August, he was appointed as the new senior hurling manager for Antrim.

Legal proceedings in the case remain ongoing.
