Washington, D.C.: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a controversial plan to permanently resettle displaced Palestinians from the Gaza Strip outside the conflict-ravaged region, while advocating for U.S. leadership in transforming Gaza into "the Riviera of the Middle East."
Trump’s remarks, made during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House, are likely to impact ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at extending the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The discussions also focus on securing the release of remaining hostages and accelerating humanitarian aid for Gaza, which has endured over 15 months of intense conflict.
As part of his proposal, Trump suggested relocating approximately 1.8 million Palestinians and potentially placing Gaza under U.S. control, with the possibility of American troops playing a role in the region’s future governance. He revealed that discussions on this matter had been initiated with regional stakeholders, including Jordan and Egypt.
However, Egypt, Jordan, and other U.S. allies in the Middle East have strongly cautioned against forced displacement, warning that such a move could destabilize the region, escalate tensions, and undermine long-standing efforts toward a two-state solution.
“I would like to see an agreement to resettle people permanently in nice homes where they can be happy and not be shot, not be killed,” Trump stated.
Protests Erupt Outside White House Amid Netanyahu’s Visit
As Trump hosted Netanyahu for discussions in the Oval Office, pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the White House, condemning Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the Israeli leader’s presence in Washington.
The protest coincided with the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza, where more than 47,500 Palestinians have reportedly died since October 7, 2023. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as “Free, free Palestine” and “Stop hosting a war criminal.” Demonstrators also held placards reading “Prime Minister of Genocide,” “Netanyahu is a War Criminal,” and “Israel Kills.”
Netanyahu’s visit comes at a critical juncture in the region’s diplomatic landscape, with international calls for de-escalation, humanitarian aid expansion, and a long-term resolution to the conflict gaining momentum.
