London: A powerful Azores storm is set to sweep across the UK in the coming days, bringing heavy snowfall of up to 13cm (5 inches) in certain areas, according to new weather forecasts.
Meteorological data from Ventusky indicates that a massive storm system originating west of Portugal will make landfall in the UK from midnight on March 9. Weather maps highlight the southwest of England and the Midlands as the most affected regions, with Swindon and surrounding towns expected to receive the heaviest snowfall.
Other areas likely to be impacted include:
Northampton – up to 10cm (4 inches) of snow
Leicester and Peterborough – approximately 8cm (3 inches)
Birmingham and Lincoln – around 2.5cm (1 inch
Met Office Forecast Hints at Unsettled Conditions
While the Met Office's long-range forecast (March 1–10) does not explicitly mention snow, it indicates a shift towards unsettled weather patterns across the UK.
"A split in weather conditions is likely across the country for the start of spring," the Met Office stated. "Northwestern regions will experience rain and strong winds as Atlantic systems move in from the west. While the south may initially see dry conditions, the chance of widespread unsettled weather increases as the period progresses."
Temperatures are expected to remain around seasonal averages, with intermittent milder spells. However, forecasts suggest potential night frosts and morning fog patches in the south.
Authorities are advising residents to stay informed and prepare for potential travel disruptions as the storm approaches.
