Uttar Pradesh Assembly Session Begins Amid Opposition Protests

Lucknow, India | February 18 – The Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s budget session commenced on a tumultuous note as opposition lawmakers from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress raised slogans of "Go Back Governor" during Governor Anandiben Patel’s address.

As the session unfolded, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urged the opposition to ensure peaceful and constructive proceedings until the scheduled conclusion on March 5.

CM Yogi Adityanath’s Appeal for Cooperation

Addressing the disruptions, CM Yogi Adityanath emphasized the collective responsibility of both the government and opposition to facilitate smooth legislative discussions.

"It is not only the government's duty but also the opposition's responsibility to ensure the session runs without disruption. Over the past eight years, the double-engine BJP government has set unprecedented benchmarks for Uttar Pradesh’s development. These achievements should be reflected both in the Governor’s address and in House discussions," he stated.

The Chief Minister further alleged that the opposition, frustrated and disheartened, often seeks to evade meaningful debates and instead resorts to obstructing legislative proceedings. He urged opposition leaders to engage in constructive discourse, emphasizing that a productive session would benefit the people of Uttar Pradesh.

Highlighting the significance of the extended budget session, CM Yogi remarked that such prolonged sittings have been rare in the state’s history. He outlined the key legislative agenda, including:

  • Governor’s address, marking the session’s formal commencement.

  • Annual budget discussions for the 2025–26 fiscal year, scheduled for February 20.

  • Deliberations on various public welfare and development issues throughout the session.

Opposition Stages Protest Over Mahakumbh Stampede

Even before the session formally began, Samajwadi Party leaders staged a demonstration outside the assembly, protesting against the recent Mahakumbh stampede tragedy. The opposition accused the state government of severe mismanagement, leading to multiple casualties.

In a dramatic gesture of protest, one SP leader symbolically carried the ‘ashes’ of the government’s ethics, condemning the administration’s handling of the crisis.

SP leader Ashutosh Sinha, while speaking to ANI, criticized the government’s lack of transparency, stating:

"The Uttar Pradesh government organized the Mahakumbh, yet the mismanagement resulted in tragic deaths. Despite this, the administration refuses to disclose the exact death toll. They regularly announce the number of devotees taking a holy dip, yet they fail to reveal the number of those who lost their lives."

As the budget session progresses, political tensions are expected to remain high, with the opposition poised to intensify its scrutiny of the government’s policies and administrative decisions.
