New Delhi, March 8, 2025 – In a landmark decision, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has approved the much-anticipated ‘Mahila Samriddhi Yojana’, which promises a monthly financial aid of Rs 2,500 to eligible women in the national capital. Announcing the scheme on International Women's Day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the government's commitment to women's empowerment and economic upliftment.
The approval came after a special cabinet meeting held earlier in the day. Addressing the media, CM Gupta stated, “On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we called a cabinet meeting, and I am pleased to announce that our cabinet has approved the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, fulfilling a key election promise to provide direct financial assistance to women.”
Budgetary Allocation and Implementation
The Delhi government has allocated Rs 5,100 crore in the state budget for the implementation of the scheme. A dedicated committee, chaired by CM Rekha Gupta, has been formed to oversee the execution of the initiative. The committee comprises Cabinet ministers Pravesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, and Kapil Mishra. Additionally, a dedicated portal will be launched soon to facilitate seamless registration and disbursement.
According to an official statement, the scheme aims to enhance economic stability and independence for women, particularly those from economically weaker sections. The financial assistance will be provided via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring transparency and efficiency. Beneficiaries will undergo an Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification to streamline the process.
Eligibility Criteria
Women between 18 and 60 years of age who do not hold government jobs and are already enrolled in other government financial aid programs will be eligible to apply for the scheme.
Political Reactions and Opposition’s Response
The announcement has stirred political reactions, with Leader of Opposition Atishi criticizing the BJP government for delays in implementation. In a statement posted online, she remarked, “All the women of Delhi are staring at their phones today, waiting for the message of the money being deposited in their bank accounts.”
In response, BJP Delhi Chief Virendra Sachdeva dismissed Atishi’s claims, calling them politically motivated. He stated, “AAP leaders are creating unnecessary drama to divert attention from CAG reports exposing corruption within their administration.”
The BJP had originally pledged to roll out the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana on March 8, marking International Women's Day, as part of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi called 'Modi ki Guarantee'. PM Modi had previously assured that the scheme would be prioritized in the first cabinet meeting of the newly elected Delhi government.
