Boston Suburb Mayor Wins Libel Case but Faces New Scrutiny

United States: For years, Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria endured relentless attacks from a local weekly newspaper, which published shocking and false allegations against him. The Everett Leader Herald accused him of corruption, sexual harassment, and even criminal behavior, leaving him ostracized by friends and family.

“They labeled me as ‘Kickback Carlo.’ They spread lies about lawsuits, extortion, and even violent threats. It was awful,” DeMaria said.

A Rare Libel Victory

In December, DeMaria secured a $1.1 million settlement against the newspaper, leading to its closure after nearly 140 years in operation. The lawsuit revealed a smear campaign orchestrated by the paper’s owner, Matthew Philbin, and editor, Joshua Resnek. Under oath, Resnek admitted fabricating multiple stories.

Legal experts noted that such defamation victories are rare due to the high legal standard for public figures to prove “actual malice.” However, the court found overwhelming evidence of intentional falsehoods.

Despite this legal win, DeMaria now faces scrutiny over alleged financial misconduct, an issue the Everett Leader Herald previously covered.

A Mayor’s Rise and Growing Scrutiny

Since taking office in 2007, DeMaria has been credited with revitalizing Everett, attracting major developments like a casino and a potential professional soccer stadium. His leadership earned him repeated reelections, though his salary—reaching $232,700—sparked controversy.

In 2021, DeMaria narrowly won reelection by just over 200 votes after a bruising campaign. Meanwhile, allegations surfaced regarding substantial bonus payments he received, leading to a state investigation.

New Allegations Emerge

In February, the Massachusetts Office of the Inspector General released a report accusing DeMaria of improperly collecting $180,000 in longevity bonuses between 2016 and 2021. The report alleged that he and city officials concealed these payments within budget line items and may have violated ethics laws.

The Everett City Council, which once supported DeMaria, has since turned against him. While they lack the authority to remove him from office, council members have demanded repayment, launched an audit of city finances, and referred the case to the state ethics commission, which could impose fines or recommend prosecution.

DeMaria denies any wrongdoing, insisting he never engaged in concealment. “These accusations are politically motivated,” he said. “I will continue to fight for my family and the people of Everett.”

Public Opinion Divided

The controversy has divided Everett residents. Some lament the loss of local news coverage following the Leader Herald’s closure. Others, like Councilor Peter Pietrantonio, view the new allegations as a serious breach of public trust.

“This is a sad day for our community,” Pietrantonio said. “These are serious facts against the mayor.”

Despite launching his reelection campaign, DeMaria faces an uphill battle amid mounting scrutiny. As investigations continue, his political future—and legacy—remain uncertain.
