Myanmar Earthquake: Devastating Twin Quakes Leave Trail of Destruction

Myanmar , March 28, 2025 , was struck by two powerful earthquakes on Friday, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was located nearly 50 kilometers east of Monywa in central Myanmar. The tremors were felt across the region, including parts of Thailand, triggering chaos and fear.

Widespread Destruction in Myanmar

The earthquakes wreaked havoc in Myanmar’s Mandalay region, leading to the collapse of the iconic Ava Bridge. In the capital city, hospitals were overwhelmed with mass casualties as rescue teams scrambled to provide assistance. At least 20 people have been reported dead in Mandalay, while five others, including children, lost their lives in Taungoo when a monastery sheltering war refugees collapsed. Numerous individuals sustained injuries, and the numbers are expected to rise as search operations continue.

Mandalay University also suffered significant damage, with reports of fire breaking out in some parts of the campus. Authorities fear casualties within the institution as rescue operations are ongoing.

Impact in Thailand: High-Rise Collapses in Bangkok

The tremors were felt as far as Thailand, where an under-construction skyscraper in Bangkok collapsed due to the quake’s intensity. At least three people lost their lives, and 81 others were initially reported missing, according to the Thai deputy prime minister. Dozens of people were also injured as panic-stricken residents rushed to evacuate high-rise buildings across the city.

Casualties and Missing Persons

As of now, the total reported casualties stand at 25 dead, 43 missing, and several others injured. The figures are expected to rise as emergency response teams assess the full extent of the disaster.

International Reactions and Assistance

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the disaster and extended offers of assistance. He also directed Indian authorities to remain on standby to provide any necessary aid.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with emergency teams working tirelessly to locate survivors amidst the debris. The international community continues to monitor the situation, and humanitarian aid is expected to be dispatched soon to support relief efforts in the affected regions.
