Mumbai, March 24, 2025 – Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has once again found himself at the center of controversy, this time over remarks directed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The dispute erupted following the release of a video on Kamra’s official YouTube channel, in which he allegedly referred to Shinde as a “traitor.”
The video has triggered widespread outrage among supporters of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, leading to protests and legal action. In response, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Murji Patel filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the MIDC Police Station, demanding swift action against Kamra.
“We have lodged an FIR against Kunal Kamra for his derogatory comments against our leader and Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. We expect immediate legal action,” Patel stated in a press briefing.
Additionally, Patel issued an ultimatum, insisting that Kamra apologize within two days. “If he fails to do so, Shiv Sainiks will not allow him to move freely in Mumbai. If spotted in public, his face will be blackened,” Patel warned, further announcing plans to raise the matter in the state assembly and urge the Home Minister to intervene.
Protests and Vandalism Follow Video Release
In the wake of Patel’s statements, protests erupted across Mumbai, with Shiv Sena supporters demanding stringent measures against Kamra. Videos circulating on social media depicted party workers vandalizing a studio where the comedian had allegedly filmed the contentious video. Protesters were seen smashing furniture, lights, and other equipment in an apparent display of anger.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, known for his sharp political critiques, condemned the actions of the Shinde faction while also taking aim at Maharashtra’s Home Minister, Devendra Fadnavis. “Kunal Kamra is a well-known satirist. His political humor has rattled the Shinde faction, leading to acts of vandalism. Devendra Ji, you are a weak Home Minister!” Raut posted on X.
Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe criticized the violent response from Shiv Sena workers, emphasizing that political grievances should be addressed through legal channels. “Holding a constitutional post means upholding the law. If someone feels aggrieved, they should file a complaint—not resort to vandalism,” Londhe stated.
Kamra’s History of Controversy
Kunal Kamra is no stranger to political disputes. His brand of satire frequently targets political figures, journalists, and public personalities, often provoking strong reactions from supporters and detractors alike. While he has faced legal notices and social media backlash in the past, the current controversy has escalated to physical protests and police intervention.
As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether Kamra will issue an apology or stand by his remarks. The incident has reignited debates over the balance between freedom of speech and political sensitivity, highlighting the challenges comedians and satirists face in India’s polarized political landscape.
