Eyes around the world were glued to the screens, the much-anticipated return of the astronauts had finally come, and reentry, parachute deployment, and splashdown went smoothly.
The pair were originally scheduled to be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) in June 2024 for an eight-day mission, but due to some technical issues with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft, they were forced to remain on the ISS.
Since the capsule was returned to Earth unmanned, there was no set date for the astronauts' return. After several delays, the launch mission, jointly conducted by NASA and SpaceX, was set for March 12.
A SpaceX Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts, including Starliner test pilots Sunita Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore, undocked from the orbiting outpost at 1:05 a.m. ET (5:05 a.m. GMT). After a 17-hour descent, the spacecraft was scheduled to splash down off the Florida coast at approximately 6 p.m.
