Dublin – Gardaí have launched an investigation following a serious safety incident earlier this month, in which a Luas tram partially derailed after rocks were deliberately placed on the tracks.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, between the Red Cow and Kingswood stops on the Luas Red Line. In a letter addressed to local residents, tram operator Transdev confirmed that the obstruction posed a significant safety threat.
“This reckless act posed a severe risk of derailing a tram, endangering passengers and staff, and disrupting the entire Red Line service,” the letter stated. “Unfortunately, this is not the first occurrence of such an incident. At Luas, the safety of our customers, staff, and services is our top priority.”
Transdev emphasized that it is working closely with An Garda Síochána, South Dublin County Council, and other relevant authorities to prevent further incidents and ensure the continued safe operation of the Luas network. Residents are urged to report any instances of anti-social behavior or suspicious activity immediately.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed the investigation, stating: “Gardaí are investigating an incident of endangering traffic in the Ballymount area, Dublin 24, on Thursday night, March 6, 2025.”
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, as efforts intensify to safeguard public transport infrastructure and passenger safety.
