Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent interview with US-based podcaster and AI researcher Lex Fridman, reflected on his strong rapport with US President Donald Trump, attributing their connection to a shared commitment to national interests. Modi emphasized that both leaders prioritize their respective countries, which forms the foundation of their mutual understanding.
“Even after an assassination attempt during his campaign, President Trump remained resolute and unwavering in his dedication to America. His life is devoted to his nation, embodying the ‘America First’ spirit—just as I believe in putting India first. This shared conviction is why we connect so well,” Modi stated in the nearly three-hour-long discussion.
A Relationship Built on Trust and Mutual Respect
During the conversation, Modi spoke about his camaraderie with Trump, who recently secured a second term by defeating Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Fridman inquired about the qualities Modi admires in Trump as both a leader and a friend, referencing the President’s earlier remark that Modi is a “much tougher, much better negotiator.”
Recalling the ‘Howdy Modi’ event, the Prime Minister shared a defining moment that underscored their mutual trust. He recounted how Trump spontaneously joined him in walking into a crowd of thousands without prior security arrangements.
“In American political life, it is almost unheard of for a President to walk into such a massive gathering without a moment’s hesitation. But he agreed immediately. His security team was caught off guard, yet he trusted me in that moment. It was a deeply moving experience,” Modi said.
He elaborated on Trump’s decisiveness and courage, emphasizing that their relationship is built on a foundation of confidence and shared leadership values.
Modi’s First Visit to the White House
Reflecting on his first visit to the White House during Trump’s initial term, Modi recalled how the President defied formal protocols and personally gave him a tour of the historic residence.
“The moment I stepped into the White House, he broke all traditional formalities. He personally led the tour, without notes, cue cards, or aides. He pointed out historical landmarks, detailing their significance with remarkable depth. He spoke about Abraham Lincoln’s residence and the long courtroom design, even identifying the exact locations where past Presidents had signed key documents. It was clear how deeply connected he was to America’s history,” Modi said.
An Unwavering Friendship
Modi also noted that despite changes in leadership, his relationship with Trump remained strong. Even during Joe Biden’s presidency, Trump continued to acknowledge their friendship in conversations with mutual acquaintances.
“Throughout those four years, whenever someone we both knew met him, he would say, ‘Modi is my friend, convey my regards.’ Such gestures are rare in global diplomacy. Even without direct meetings, our connection remained intact,” he remarked.
The interview provided a rare and candid insight into the personal and professional dynamics between two of the world’s most influential leaders, shedding light on the values that define their enduring partnership.
