New Delhi, March 20, 2025 – Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday, accusing them of joining forces against farmers following the eviction of protesters from the Shambhu and Khanauri borders.
Kharge alleged that both parties, driven by arrogance and power, had betrayed the nation's farmers. “It appears that two anti-farmer parties have now joined hands against the country’s food providers. First, the Punjab government invited farmers for talks, only to forcibly remove them from their protest sites later,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Condemnation of Farmer Leaders' Detention
The Congress President strongly condemned the detention of senior farmer leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher, by Punjab Police. He recalled past instances of alleged atrocities against farmers, stating:
-
"The country has not forgotten Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh," where police fired on protesting farmers under BJP rule.
-
"The Lakhimpur Kheri incident," where the son of a Modi government minister allegedly crushed protesting farmers.
-
"A farmer from Rajasthan who took his own life at Kejriwal’s rally in 2015, as the Delhi Chief Minister remained a silent spectator."
Kharge further accused both the BJP and AAP of betraying farmers, citing Modi’s unfulfilled MSP promise and AAP’s role in implementing the contentious farm laws in Delhi. He declared that the nation’s 62 crore farmers would never forgive these actions.
Shambhu Border Evictions and Protests
Meanwhile, following the eviction of farmers from the Shambhu border, Haryana security personnel on Thursday began dismantling barricades that had been erected to block Punjab farmers from marching to Delhi. JCB machines were deployed to remove concrete blocks, iron nails, and barbed wire, clearing the Shambhu-Ambala road, which had remained shut for over a year.
Additionally, Punjab Police resumed its crackdown on Thursday, dismantling the remaining protest structures on the Punjab side of the border.
Farm Unions Announce Protests Against Punjab Government
In response to the forcible evictions, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha announced statewide protests, including dharnas outside deputy commissioners' offices.
Both farm unions strongly criticized the AAP-led Punjab government, accusing it of siding with the Centre in suppressing the farmer movement.
With political tensions rising over the farmer issue, the situation remains volatile, as farm leaders vow to intensify their protests in the coming days.
