Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has categorically refuted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut's assertion that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to retire from politics. Addressing the media on Monday, Fadnavis emphasized that it is not customary in "Sanatan culture" to discuss succession while the leader is still in office.
“In our culture, when the father is alive, it is inappropriate to talk about succession. That is Mughal culture. The time has not come to discuss it,” Fadnavis stated. He further affirmed that Prime Minister Modi will continue to lead the nation for years to come, expressing confidence that Modi will serve another term in 2029.
"There is no need to search for his successor. He (Modi) is our leader and will continue,” Fadnavis asserted in Nagpur.
Sanjay Raut's Claims on PM Modi's Successor
Earlier in the day, Sanjay Raut claimed that Prime Minister Modi had visited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur to deliberate on his retirement plans. According to Raut, Modi’s successor would be from Maharashtra, with the RSS playing a key role in the selection process.
“Modi's successor will be from Maharashtra, and the RSS will decide on that,” Raut stated during a press conference.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Nagpur on Sunday included a floral tribute to RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar at Smruti Mandir in Reshimbagh. He was accompanied by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, and other senior leaders.
RSS Leader Responds to Speculation
Senior RSS leader Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi dismissed the claims regarding Modi’s succession, stating he was unaware of any such discussions within the Sangh.
“I don’t have any such information,” Joshi said in response to Raut’s remarks. Commenting on Modi’s visit to the RSS headquarters, Joshi added, “His visit and the laying of the foundation stone for the Madhav Netralaya center have further elevated the institute’s stature. As an RSS swayamsevak, his tribute to Dr. Hedgewar on the founder’s birth anniversary was also significant.”
Speculation Surrounding Modi’s Retirement
Prime Minister Modi will turn 75 in September this year, a milestone that has fueled speculation regarding his political future. Opposition parties have frequently referenced the BJP’s internal ‘no ticket above 75’ policy, suggesting it could influence future leadership transitions. However, BJP leaders have consistently dismissed such claims, reiterating Modi’s leadership will continue beyond 2024.
