Kozhikode: In a shocking incident, a young man died after swallowing a packet of MDMA while attempting to evade police in Thamarassery, Kozhikode. The deceased has been identified as Shanid, a native of Maikavu, who reportedly succumbed to the toxic effects of a high dose of MDMA in his system.
The incident occurred on Friday when a police patrol team spotted Shanid near Ambayathodu, Thamarassery, under suspicious circumstances. Upon noticing the police vehicle, he swallowed the MDMA packets he was carrying and tried to flee. Officers pursued and apprehended him immediately.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, police rushed Shanid to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital, where doctors referred him to Kozhikode Medical College due to critical complications. A subsequent endoscopic procedure confirmed the presence of MDMA packets in his stomach. Despite intensive medical intervention, Shanid succumbed to the effects of the drug at around 10 AM on Saturday.
Authorities revealed that Shanid had a history of drug-related offenses, with two previous cases filed against him. Local residents had earlier complained about his involvement in MDMA distribution in the Thamarassery and Ambayathodu areas. Reports indicate that he had been active in drug peddling for over two years, especially after returning from the Gulf, where he was previously employed.
Community Concerns & Police Action
Residents near Shanid’s home, located near Ambayathodu Paramal Mosque, stated that he was not well-known in the neighborhood and often kept to himself. Some family members had suspected his drug abuse habits, as he frequently returned home late at night.
Locals have urged stronger enforcement against drug-related activities, expressing concerns that several individuals linked to drug networks remain at large. A resident noted that authorities had been alerted about the presence of drug dealers in the area, but more decisive action is necessary.
Call for Stricter Enforcement
The incident has once again highlighted the rising menace of synthetic drugs in Kerala. Residents are calling for a more proactive approach from law enforcement agencies, urging police and excise officials to intensify crackdowns on drug networks operating in the region.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to Shanid’s drug supply chain.
