Nagpur, March 22 – Authorities have arrested 14 additional individuals in connection with the recent violence in Nagpur, bringing the total number of arrests to 105, a senior police official confirmed.
Among those detained on Friday, 10 are juveniles, according to law enforcement officials. In addition, three new First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered in relation to the incident.
The unrest, which erupted on March 17, was triggered by unverified reports that a "chadar" bearing holy inscriptions had been burned during protests led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The demonstrations were aimed at demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
“Fourteen individuals were taken into custody from different parts of the city in connection with the riots. Three additional FIRs have been filed,” Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singhal stated.
The commissioner also indicated that a decision on easing curfew restrictions in certain areas would be made following a high-level review meeting. Meanwhile, a security assessment meeting was held at Police Bhavan in Civil Lines to evaluate the situation.
During the clashes, 33 police personnel, including three officers of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) rank, sustained injuries.
Among those arrested, key accused Fahim Khan has been charged with sedition, police sources confirmed.
