MOSCOW/WASHINGTON D.C. – Russian President Vladimir Putin has adopted a cautious stance regarding a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine, neither accepting nor rejecting the proposition. Instead, he has raised a series of questions and sought clarifications from the United States, leaving the international community in a state of uncertainty.
Putin expressed support for the idea of a ceasefire but emphasized the need for "long-term peace" and the elimination of the "original causes" of the crisis. He posed critical questions regarding the monitoring of the truce and the subsequent steps to be taken.
"We agree with the proposal to cease hostilities, but we proceed from the fact that this cessation should be such that it would lead to long-term peace," Putin stated.
The Russian President's remarks came ahead of a meeting with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, who subsequently returned to Washington D.C. with a message for President Donald Trump. Trump, while remaining hopeful, acknowledged the need for further dialogue to address Putin's concerns.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, interpreted Putin's response as a tactic to buy time and prepare for an eventual rejection of the ceasefire. He accused Putin of being "scared to tell President Trump directly that he wants to continue this war."
The ambiguity surrounding Putin's stance has raised questions about his true intentions and the prospects for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The success of any ceasefire hinges on further talks between Putin and Trump, with the world watching closely for developments.
