March 25, 2025 – Russia wants to involve the United Nations in discussions with the United States regarding a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, Russian negotiator Grigory Karasin stated on Tuesday. Speaking to the official Russian news agency TASS, Karasin, a senator and former career diplomat, emphasized Moscow’s intent to continue negotiations with international involvement.
“We will continue discussions involving the international community, particularly the United Nations and some other countries,” Karasin said after holding 12 hours of closed-door talks with a US delegation in Saudi Arabia.
Further Talks Expected
Following the extensive discussions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United States concluded negotiations aimed at establishing a partial ceasefire in Ukraine. The talks come more than three years after the Russian invasion began. To summarize the discussions, the White House and the Kremlin are expected to issue a joint statement on Tuesday.
A member of the Ukrainian delegation stated that once the outcome of the US-Russia talks is clear, Ukraine will plan new negotiations with the American representatives.
Focus on a Grain Deal
The talks are also centered on a possible ceasefire in the Black Sea region to allow a return to the grain export deal. The agreement, which allowed Ukraine to export grain crucial for global food supply, was in place from July 2022 to July 2023. However, Russia withdrew from the deal, accusing Western nations of failing to uphold their commitments. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Monday that discussions include all aspects related to the grain agreement’s reinstatement.
Moratorium on Attacks on Energy Facilities
Ukraine has expressed willingness for an “unconditional and general” ceasefire. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin appears determined to continue military advances despite heavy losses, especially in the border region of Kursk. At this stage, the Kremlin claims that it has reached an understanding with Washington regarding a moratorium on bombing energy infrastructure.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the outcome of these negotiations could play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of the conflict in Ukraine.
