Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], March 22: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has emphasized the need for broader discussions on the delimitation process, asserting that the issue demands extensive deliberation among stakeholders. Speaking to the media in Bhubaneswar, Tharoor stated, "I think the delimitation issue requires much more talking to each other. There are a lot of important discussions it requires."
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on delimitation convened its first meeting in Chennai on Saturday, passing a resolution expressing concerns over the lack of transparency and clarity in the Union government's approach to the delimitation exercise.
The meeting, initiated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, was attended by several prominent opposition leaders, including chief ministers and party representatives. Addressing the media, DMK MP Kanimozhi underscored the committee’s concerns regarding the process, particularly the absence of consultation with key stakeholders.
"I would like to read the resolution which has been passed today. The JAC (Joint Action Committee) expressed its deep concern about the lack of transparency and clarity in the delimitation exercise without any consultation with the various stakeholders," Kanimozhi stated. She further acknowledged Chief Minister Stalin's efforts in safeguarding the political and economic interests of well-performing states and highlighted the committee's unanimous resolution demanding a transparent process that includes participation from all political parties, state governments, and stakeholders.
Referring to the 42nd, 84th, and 87th Constitutional Amendments, Kanimozhi stressed that these aimed to protect states that had effectively implemented population control measures. Given that national population stabilization has yet to be achieved, she argued for an extension of the freeze on parliamentary constituency adjustments based on the 1971 census for another 25 years.
The meeting saw the participation of key political figures, including Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das, and Biju Janata Dal leader Sanjay Kumar Das Burma, among others.
Chief Minister Stalin announced that the next deliberation on the delimitation issue would be held in Hyderabad, Telangana.
