Strict Penalties for Underage Driving: Motor Vehicles Department Issues Warning

Kasaragod: Minors engaging in underage driving now face severe legal consequences, with the Motor Vehicles Department announcing that offenders will be barred from obtaining a learner’s license until the age of 25.

With the summer holidays approaching, authorities anticipate a surge in underage driving, particularly involving vehicles registered under the names of parents, relatives, or older friends. In response, a strict warning has been issued to deter such violations.

Stricter Laws and Parental Accountability

Recognizing the rise in underage driving incidents, the 2019 amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act introduced tougher penalties. Importantly, accountability extends beyond the minor—parents or guardians will also face legal consequences if their child is caught driving without a valid license.

Key Penalties for Underage Driving

  • Fine of up to ₹10,000 for the underage driver.

  • Parents or guardians may face up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹25,000.

  • Vehicle registration will be cancelled for one year if an underage driver is found operating it.

  • Additional legal action may be pursued under the Juvenile Justice Act.

Authorities are urging parents and guardians to strictly monitor their children’s activities to prevent violations and ensure road safety.
