New Delhi, April 9, 2025 — Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly criticised the Congress Party’s historical leadership for the partition of India, attributing the division to the politics of appeasement and decisions made by the party's top brass. His remarks came during a keynote session at the CNN-News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2025, where he aligned with similar views expressed a day earlier by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing the audience in Delhi, Shah asserted that the Muslim population of undivided India was not in favour of the partition. “The Muslim League lost the provincial elections of 1946 even in areas that later became Pakistan,” he noted. “The Muslim populace of the time was not in favour of a division. And Modiji is right when he says that Congress leaders of the time are responsible for the country’s partition. Their policy of appeasement is responsible for the country’s partition.”
When pressed to identify which Congress leader should be held accountable, Shah refrained from naming an individual but made a pointed remark: “It would be very difficult to single out a leader. Congress later made Jawaharlal Nehru the Prime Minister. Whoever takes the decision becomes the PM. Our topmost leader is Modiji, so he became the PM. Congress made Nehru ji the PM then.”
In his address at the same summit a day earlier, Prime Minister Modi had stated that the idea of partition did not stem from India’s Muslim communities at large but rather from “some fundamentalists, who were nourished by some Congress leaders, so that they could become the sole claimants of power.”
Amit Shah also issued a passionate appeal to the youth of the country, urging them to reject divisive politics. “If needed, tolerate everything else. But never tolerate this poisonous scab of appeasement that the young generation must uproot and throw out of the country forever,” he said.
He concluded by underlining the ideological stance of the BJP on this issue: “Anyone following the policy of appeasement is working against the interests of the country.”
The remarks have added fuel to an ongoing national discourse on historical accountability and the legacy of partition, with the BJP leadership sharpening its critique of the Congress Party’s role in shaping post-colonial India.
