Ahmedabad, April 10, 2025 — The Rajasthan Royals, under the leadership of Sanju Samson, suffered their third defeat of the IPL 2025 season on Wednesday night, failing to chase a daunting 218-run target set by Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The loss was compounded by disciplinary action from the BCCI, as the Royals were penalised for a slow over-rate — their second such offence this season.
According to an official statement issued by the BCCI, “As this was his (Samson’s) team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Samson was fined INR 24 lakhs.” The remaining members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each fined either INR 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever was lower.
As an additional on-field penalty, Rajasthan Royals were permitted only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle during the final over of Gujarat Titans’ innings due to the slow over-rate. The Titans capitalised on the advantage, adding 16 runs in the 20th over — bowled by Sandeep Sharma — and concluded their innings at an imposing 217/6.
In pursuit of 218, the Royals faltered early and struggled to build momentum. The only promising phase came through a 48-run partnership between captain Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer, which briefly lifted the visitors from 68/4 to 116/4 following the dismissal of Dhruv Jurel. However, Samson’s wicket — dismissed for 41 — triggered a collapse, and Rajasthan were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19.2 overs, handing Gujarat a commanding 58-run victory.
The win marked Gujarat Titans' fourth triumph of the season, placing them at the top of the IPL 2025 points table with eight points from five matches. Delhi Capitals, with two games in hand, currently trail in second place.
Following this defeat, the Rajasthan Royals have slipped to seventh in the standings, as they continue to search for consistency in the tournament.
