New Delhi, April 4, 2025 — Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai on Friday clarified that he is not in the running for the party’s state leadership, emphasizing that any selection of leadership within the Tamil Nadu unit will be made unanimously.
“There is no contest in Tamil Nadu BJP; we will select a leader unanimously. But I am not in the race,” Annamalai told reporters, firmly putting to rest any speculation about his own ambitions within the party's state hierarchy.
His remarks come amid renewed speculation over a potential revival of the BJP-AIADMK alliance, a move many believe is aimed at consolidating opposition strength ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections and challenging Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s DMK government. The buzz intensified after AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami met Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this week.
On March 28, Annamalai had described the 2026 state elections as a crucial opportunity to "dethrone the DMK", citing widespread allegations of corruption and a perceived breakdown in law and order under the current administration.
"The DMK should be brought down from power, and no vote should be wasted through vote-splitting among various parties. Tamil Nadu currently faces a five-cornered contest — something rarely seen in Indian politics," he said.
Reiterating the BJP’s disciplined and centralized approach to coalition politics, Annamalai underlined that any decision regarding alliances would be taken by the party’s national leadership.
"In a national party like the BJP, alliance decisions are made through structured deliberations. Our parliamentary board and committees analyze all strategic aspects before arriving at a conclusion," he said.
As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu continues to shift, the BJP's next move — particularly regarding its relationship with the AIADMK — will be closely watched by both allies and adversaries ahead of the 2026 polls.
