The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday issued fresh summons to businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in connection with an ongoing money-laundering investigation linked to the Shikhopur land deal in Haryana.
This marks the second time Vadra has been summoned in relation to the case. He was initially called for questioning on April 8 but failed to appear before the agency.
Background: The DLF Land Deal Controversy
The case has its roots in allegations dating back to October 2011, when activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal accused Vadra of receiving an interest-free loan of ₹65 crore and preferential treatment in land transactions from real estate giant DLF Limited. The alleged benefits were purportedly extended in exchange for political influence during the tenure of the then Congress-led government in Haryana.
DLF, in its official response at the time, stated that its dealings with Vadra were strictly commercial in nature. The company described the ₹65 crore as a standard business advance made for land acquisitions and denied any sale of property at discounted rates or the existence of a quid pro quo arrangement.
Scope of the Investigation
Robert Vadra, along with former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and officials from DLF, is also under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for alleged irregularities in land allotments and transactions.
The ED’s money-laundering probe is specifically focused on a 50-acre land deal in Amipur village, executed during the tenure of the Hooda-led government in 2013. Investigators allege that Vadra accrued illegal gains of over ₹50 crore from the transaction within a matter of months in 2008, through undervalued land acquisitions and subsequent resale at substantial profits.
The case remains politically sensitive, with agencies continuing to examine the financial trails and documents linked to the deal. Further developments are expected following Vadra’s response to the latest summons.
