AGRA, April 18, 2025:Former Bijnor MLA Mohammad Ghazi was arrested on Wednesday night by Muzaffarnagar police for allegedly facilitating the smuggling of a mobile phone into jail for his relative, former BSP legislator Shahnawaz Rana, currently in judicial custody. The arrest followed an investigation linking Ghazi to a mobile phone recovered from Rana’s prison cell on March 25.
According to police sources, the phone in question was registered under the name of Aamir, an aide of Ghazi. During interrogation, Aamir admitted to providing the SIM card to Ghazi, which was subsequently traced to the handset found in Rana’s possession.
Superintendent of Police (City), Satyanarayan Prajapat, confirmed the development, stating, “A case has been registered against Mohammad Ghazi under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 318 for cheating and Section 338 for forgery of valuable documents. He was presented before the magistrate on Thursday and has been remanded to judicial custody.”
The arrest marks the latest development in an ongoing case involving former BSP MLA Shahnawaz Rana, who was detained in December 2024 following a complaint filed by a woman GST officer. She accused Rana of inappropriate behavior and issuing life threats during an official raid at a factory linked to a former Member of Parliament.
Initially lodged in Muzaffarnagar jail, Rana was later transferred to Chitrakoot prison. A separate case was registered against him by jail authorities, including charges of criminal intimidation and possession of an unauthorised communication device. The phone was reportedly handed to Rana during a court appearance, a moment which investigators now believe involved Ghazi directly.
The investigation continues, with authorities examining the possibility of additional parties involved in breaching prison protocols.
