India’s Pharma Sector Gains Amid U.S. Tariff Measures

 India’s pharmaceutical industry has emerged as a key beneficiary of the United States’ latest tariff policies, as pharmaceuticals have been exempted from the 27% import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on goods from approximately 60 countries, including India. The exemption underscores the critical role of Indian generic medicines in global healthcare and reinforces the nation’s standing as a pharmaceutical powerhouse.

Industry leaders have hailed the decision as a strategic win for India, emphasizing the sector’s growing significance in international trade.

Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), lauded the U.S. administration’s decision, stating that it reflects the essential role of generic medicines in ensuring public health, economic stability, and national security.

“India and the U.S. share a strong and evolving bilateral trade relationship, with pharmaceuticals being a cornerstone of this partnership,” Jain told PTI. He further highlighted India’s pivotal contribution to global and U.S. healthcare by ensuring a consistent supply of cost-effective medicines.
