New Delhi, April 7, 2025 — Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, used the backdrop of a global stock market downturn to take a pointed dig at the NDA-led Bihar government on Monday. Speaking at the Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan in Patna, Gandhi criticized the economic policies of the central government while emphasizing the deep economic disconnect faced by ordinary Biharis.
Highlighting the limited participation of Bihar’s population in equity markets, Gandhi remarked, “Less than one percent of the people in Bihar have invested in the stock market. So when global markets fall, it doesn't affect you — because this system isn’t designed for your benefit. The wealth generated through it doesn’t reach your hands.”
The Congress MP also launched a scathing attack on the government over social inequality, alleging that marginalized communities continue to be treated as second-class citizens. “We are committed to dismantling the artificial ceiling on reservations. The 50 percent cap is a fabricated barrier, and Congress will tear it down,” he asserted.
Reiterating his party's promise, Gandhi said the Congress would conduct a nationwide caste census, calling it an "X-ray of India" to ensure social justice and equitable distribution of resources. Drawing ideological inspiration from national icons, he added, “Ambedkar ji fought for the truth of the Dalit experience. Gandhi’s autobiography is titled My Experiments with Truth — not My Experiments with Lies, which could be the title of Mr. Modi’s memoir.”
Joined by youth leader Kanhaiya Kumar, Gandhi also kicked off a high-profile padayatra in Begusarai, where he was met by large crowds and enthusiastic participation from young people. In a video message posted on social media platform X, he called upon Bihar’s youth to join the march, dressed in white T-shirts, symbolizing unity and peace.
“Our goal is to shine a spotlight on the crisis of unemployment and the rising wave of forced migration. Government jobs are becoming scarce, and privatization isn’t benefiting the common man. It’s time to hold the government accountable and demand change,” Gandhi said in the video.
This grassroots campaign is part of Congress’s broader strategy to re-establish its footing in Bihar ahead of the high-stakes 2025 Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled for October or November. With all 243 seats up for grabs, the party is positioning itself as the champion of social equity and youth empowerment in one of India’s most politically significant states.
