Terror Attack Targets Tourists in Pahalgam, One Killed and Five Injured

Pahalgam, April 22 — In a tragic incident that has once again brought the focus back to the security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, terrorists launched an attack on a group of tourists in the picturesque town of Pahalgam on Tuesday. The assault claimed the life of one tourist and left five others injured, two of whom are reported to be in critical condition.

According to officials who spoke with CNN-News18, security forces have been deployed to the area but are facing logistical challenges due to the region’s rugged terrain. Local police personnel were instrumental in providing immediate aid and transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Visuals from the scene depicted a harrowing aftermath, with several tourists—among them women and elderly individuals—visibly distressed. The attack has been widely condemned, sparking concerns over its potential impact on the region’s vital tourism sector.

Reacting to the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Sakina Masood Itoo expressed deep regret: “Tourism brings livelihoods and growth to our people. It is deeply unfortunate that visitors who come here in peace have been targeted. These incidents risk undoing years of progress in rebuilding confidence among travelers.”

Preliminary reports indicate that gunshots were first heard near a meadow in Baisaran, a popular tourist spot in Pahalgam. The incident has prompted swift responses from political leaders across the spectrum.

Former Chief Minister and President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, condemned the violence in a statement: “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. This senseless violence achieves nothing and only deepens suffering. There is no justification for such brutality.”

Similarly, Sajjad Lone, leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (PC), described the attack as both “dastardly and cowardly.” He noted: “We have a proud tradition of hospitality. These cowardly acts aim to dismantle our image and our economy. The tourism industry, after years of hardship, was beginning to revive—and now, once again, dreams are being shattered.”

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. Enhanced security measures are expected in the region in the coming days.
