India Declares Three-Day State Mourning Following the Passing of Pope Francis

New Delhi, April 22, 2025 — The Government of India has declared a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect following the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Supreme Pontiff of the Holy See, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the government confirmed that the mourning will be observed across the country on April 22 and 23, with an additional day to be observed on the day of the Pope’s funeral.

“His Holiness Pope Francis, Supreme Pontiff of the Holy See, passed away on April 21. As a mark of respect, three-day state mourning shall be observed throughout India,” the ministry said.

During the period of mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where it is regularly displayed. In addition, no official entertainment or ceremonial events will be held during this time.

Pope Francis, the first non-European to ascend to the papacy in nearly 1,300 years, was widely respected for his efforts toward interfaith dialogue, social justice, and global peace. His passing has drawn tributes from leaders and communities around the world, reflecting the profound influence he wielded across religious and political spheres.

India joins the global community in mourning the loss of a towering spiritual figure whose legacy transcended borders and faiths.
