In the early hours of Saturday, a devastating building collapse in Delhi’s Mustafabad area resulted in the loss of four lives, with several others feared trapped beneath the debris, according to official reports.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police have mobilized to the site, initiating a comprehensive rescue operation. Surveillance footage obtained from the scene captured the moment a four-storey L-shaped structure succumbed to structural failure. Additional video evidence, disseminated by the news agency ANI, depicts local residents collaborating with rescue teams to clear rubble and aid in the recovery efforts. Rajendra Atwal, Divisional Fire Officer, reported that emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 2:50 a.m. “Upon receiving the distress call, our teams promptly arrived at the location, where we discovered the entire building had collapsed, trapping individuals under the wreckage,” Atwal stated. “The NDRF and Delhi Fire Service are working diligently to extricate those still trapped.”
Sandeep Lamba, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for the North East District, confirmed that 14 individuals have been successfully rescued. However, an estimated 8 to 10 people remain unaccounted for beneath the debris of the collapsed four-storey structure. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities committed to saving those still trapped.
The incident follows a sudden change in Delhi’s weather on Friday night, marked by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across multiple areas of the city. While investigations into the cause of the collapse are pending, the timing raises questions about potential environmental factors.
This tragedy comes on the heels of another recent incident in Delhi, where a wall of an under-construction building near Madhu Vihar police station collapsed during a severe dust storm last week, claiming one life and injuring two others.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further updates will be provided as rescue operations progress.
