Chennai, April 17, 2025 — Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Vijay on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court's interim order that restrains the Union Government from acting on key provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The directive was issued in response to petitions challenging the constitutionality of certain clauses in the legislation.
Expressing gratitude to the apex court, Vijay reaffirmed TVK’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority and marginalized communities. "We are deeply grateful to the Supreme Court of India for its order today on our petition against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025," he stated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
He emphasized that the court's order prevents the implementation of controversial provisions, including the inclusion of non-Muslims in the Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards—an issue the petitioners argued would infringe upon the religious autonomy of the Muslim community. The court also restrained the government from proceeding with provisions related to the denotification of properties, including those categorized as "waqf by user."
Vijay also extended his thanks to senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared on behalf of TVK in the matter. He described Singhvi’s efforts as a stand against what he termed the "unconstitutional and authoritarian measures" of the Union government.
In a subsequent statement, the TVK leader expressed hope that the court’s intervention would bring reassurance to the Muslim community. "The Supreme Court has offered solace to the millions of Muslims concerned about the implications of this law. I reiterate that I will always stand up for the rights of minorities and the marginalized. TVK will remain unwavering in its support for them," he said.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has sparked widespread debate across political and legal circles, with critics arguing that it undermines the autonomy of religious institutions. The matter continues to be under judicial scrutiny as further hearings are expected in the coming weeks.
