New Delhi, May 9, 2025 — In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, prominent Baloch writer and activist Mir Yar Baloch has declared Balochistan’s independence from Pakistan. In a series of posts on the social media platform X, Baloch called on the Indian government to permit the establishment of a Baloch embassy in New Delhi and urged the United Nations to deploy peacekeeping forces to the region, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Pakistani military forces.
Baloch’s announcement comes at a time of heightened conflict between India and Pakistan. On May 7, India conducted Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) without hitting Pakistani military infrastructure. Pakistan retaliated on Thursday with drone strikes, missiles, and artillery shelling targeting Indian civilian and military areas. India responded decisively, shooting down incoming drones, missiles, and Pakistani fighter jets, including an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft.
Balochistan’s Claim to Independence
In his posts, Mir Yar Baloch claimed that Baloch freedom fighters had attacked Pakistan’s gas fields in Dera Bugti, a critical area with over 100 gas wells. “A possible announcement soon should be done as the collapse of the terrorist Pakistan is near. We have claimed our independence and we request India to allow Balochistan's official office, and embassy in Delhi,” he wrote.
Baloch appealed for international recognition, stating, “We also ask the United Nations to recognise the independence of the Democratic Republic of Balochistan and call a meeting of all UN members to lend your support for recognition.” He further demanded the release of “billions of funds” for currency and passport printing and called for the UN to deploy peacekeepers to Balochistan, insisting that Pakistan’s “occupational army” vacate the region’s territories, airspace, and seas, leaving all weapons and property behind.
Demands for Pakistani Withdrawal
Baloch’s statements were unequivocal in their scope. He demanded that all non-Baloch personnel in Pakistan’s army, frontier corps, police, military intelligence, ISI, and civil administration leave Balochistan immediately. He announced that control of the region would soon be handed over to a new independent Balochistan government, with a transitional interim government to be formed shortly. Notably, he emphasized the inclusion of Baloch women in the cabinet, describing it as a “fulfilment of commitment to our nation.”
Baloch also hinted at a forthcoming state ceremony to mark the establishment of the independent Balochistan government, inviting heads of state from “friendly countries” to attend a national parade. In a defiant message directed at Pakistan, he wrote, “Hey Na-Pakistan. If you have an army, we Baloch have our army too. Baloch freedom fighters attack.”
Escalating Violence in the Region
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group, claimed responsibility for a recent attack on a utility vehicle carrying Pakistani military personnel, which resulted in the deaths of 14 soldiers. A video of the incident surfaced online, underscoring the intensifying violence in the region.
Balochistan, a resource-rich but underdeveloped province, has long been a flashpoint for separatist movements, with groups like the BLA accusing Pakistan of exploiting the region’s resources while marginalizing its people. Baloch’s declaration has added a new dimension to the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, raising questions about the potential for international involvement in the region.
As the situation unfolds, the international community is closely watching the developments in Balochistan and the broader India-Pakistan standoff, with calls for restraint and diplomacy amid fears of further escalation.
