India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate as Operation Sindoor Triggers Retaliatory Strike

New Delhi, May 9, 2025 — Tensions between India and Pakistan have reached a critical juncture following a series of military engagements sparked by India’s Operation Sindoor, a targeted operation against terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives, has triggered a cycle of retaliatory strikes, widespread blackouts, and heightened security measures across northern and western India.

Operation Sindoor and Pakistan’s Response

On May 7, India executed precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. The operation resulted in the elimination of 10 family members of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar and four of his close aides. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri dismissed Pakistan’s allegations that civilians and religious sites were targeted, emphasizing the strikes’ precision.

Pakistan retaliated on Thursday with a barrage of artillery fire, drones, and missile attacks on multiple locations in Jammu, including a key airstrip, as well as targets in Punjab and Rajasthan. India’s S-400 air defense system intercepted all incoming missiles, while Indian forces shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet over Rajasthan and thwarted drone and missile attacks on military installations in 15 cities, including Srinagar, Pathankot, Amritsar, and Chandigarh. In response, India launched retaliatory drone strikes on Islamabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

Pakistan’s escalation continued Thursday night with attempted strikes on military sites in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and other locations, all of which were neutralized by Indian defenses. In a separate incident, Pakistan’s shelling in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district killed 16 people and injured over 50. India condemned Pakistan for holding “state funerals” for terrorists killed in the strikes, calling it an affront to counterterrorism efforts.

Widespread Blackouts and Security Measures

The escalating conflict prompted extraordinary security measures across India. On Thursday, 24 airports were shut down as a precaution. Authorities enforced total blackouts in several border districts, including Amritsar, Pathankot, and Ferozepur in Punjab, as well as Kutch and Banaskantha in Gujarat, both of which share borders with Pakistan. In Gujarat’s Kutch district, towns such as Bhuj, Nalia, Nakhatrana, and Gandhidham experienced a seven-hour blackout from 10 p.m. Thursday to 5:30 a.m. Friday to deter potential Pakistani offensives.

In Punjab, blackouts were imposed in Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, and Hoshiarpur, while Chandigarh, the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, saw power cuts for approximately two hours until midnight. These measures were part of a broader strategy to safeguard critical infrastructure amid Pakistan’s drone and missile threats.

Regional and International Implications

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is set to chair a high-level meeting with Jammu administration officials to assess the situation following Pakistan’s failed drone attack on Jammu city and other areas. Abdullah’s convoy was seen traveling to Jammu via Udhampur on Friday morning.

On the international front, Pakistan has reportedly appealed to global partners for financial support, citing the collapse of its stock markets and the need for de-escalation, according to Reuters. The international community has yet to respond formally, but the ongoing conflict has raised concerns about regional stability.

A Region on Edge

The rapid escalation of hostilities has left residents in border areas on edge. In Punjab’s border districts, civilians spent an anxious night under blackout conditions, while security forces remain on high alert. The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to defending national sovereignty while urging restraint to prevent further escalation.

As the situation remains fluid, both nations are under scrutiny to avoid a broader conflict. The international community is closely monitoring developments, with calls for diplomatic efforts to restore calm in the region.
