Dhaka, May 23, 2025 Political uncertainty deepened in Dhaka on Thursday as rumours of a possible resignation by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, gained momentum across social media and diplomatic circles.
The speculation intensified following an evening meeting between Dr. Yunus and Nahid Islam, Convenor of the National Citizen Party (NCP), at the Chief Advisor’s official residence, Jamuna. While no formal statement was issued following the meeting, sources close to the developments confirmed to News18 that Dr. Yunus had conveyed growing dissatisfaction with his ability to continue in his role.
In an interview with BBC Bangla, Nahid Islam revealed that Dr. Yunus had expressed serious reservations about his capacity to function effectively under prevailing circumstances. “He said he was thinking about resigning. He felt the situation was such that he would not be able to work,” Islam said, adding that he urged the Chief Advisor not to make any hasty decisions.
The rising tensions within the interim administration have been underscored by reported friction between Dr. Yunus and Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman. According to insiders, the Army Chief has raised concerns about the military being sidelined in key governmental decisions. He has allegedly questioned the legitimacy of the interim government’s engagement with foreign stakeholders and its authority to make consequential decisions without an electoral mandate.
The ongoing debate over the proposed humanitarian corridor has further fueled divisions, drawing criticism from multiple political groups. The initiative has become a flashpoint in the broader discourse surrounding governance, transparency, and the role of the military in national decision-making during this transitional phase.
As the country awaits clarity, the prospect of Dr. Yunus stepping down has triggered widespread discussion about the stability of the interim setup and its ability to oversee an inclusive and credible electoral process.
No official response has yet been issued by the Office of the Chief Advisor.
