Heightened Security in Mangaluru Following the Murder of Suhas Shetty

MANGALURU, May 2 — Authorities in Mangaluru have imposed prohibitory orders across the city until May 6, following the brutal killing of Suhas Shetty, a known rowdy sheeter and a key accused in the 2022 Fazil murder case. Shetty was attacked and killed by a group of unidentified assailants on the night of May 1 in Kinnikambla, near Bajpe.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 8:30 PM, when Shetty was traveling with five associates. Their vehicle was intercepted near Kinnipadavu Cross by assailants traveling in a Swift car and a pickup truck. The attackers, estimated to be a group of six, assaulted Shetty with sharp weapons, inflicting fatal injuries. The entire incident was captured on CCTV footage.

Confirming the incident, Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal stated, “Suhas Shetty, accused number one in the Fazil murder case, was killed by five to six unidentified assailants last night. A murder case has been registered and an investigation is underway.”

While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, the police have launched a multi-pronged investigation, exploring all possible angles including political enmity. Security has been tightened throughout the city, with additional personnel deployed to sensitive areas. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been enforced to maintain public order.

Tensions flared shortly after the incident, with reports of sporadic violence and stone-pelting targeting public transport vehicles. A citywide bandh was called late Thursday night by Bajrang Dal, prompting swift action from the police to prevent further unrest.

“We have taken comprehensive measures to maintain peace and stability,” said Commissioner Agrawal. “Our teams are patrolling the city, and multiple investigative units have been formed to identify and apprehend the assailants.”

The Bajpe Police Station is leading the probe, and senior officials are closely monitoring the situation as investigators examine potential links to past criminal rivalries.
