India-Pakistan Ceasefire Undermined by Cross-Border Drone Activity and Renewed Hostilities

New Delhi, May 10 — India and Pakistan on Saturday publicly announced an agreement to implement an immediate ceasefire across land, air, and sea, following four days of heightened military confrontation involving deadly cross-border drone incursions and missile exchanges.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the agreement followed a call from the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan to his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM IST. “It was agreed between them that both sides would halt all firing and military action across all domains, effective 1700 hours Indian Standard Time,” Misri stated.

However, within hours of the declaration, fresh disturbances were reported across Jammu and Kashmir. Multiple drone sightings and explosions triggered swift responses from Indian air defence units, raising serious concerns of a potential breach of the newly-announced truce. Officials suggested that the post-ceasefire events may indicate a deliberate violation by Pakistani forces.

In a late-night media briefing, Foreign Secretary Misri strongly condemned the developments, terming them “a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today.” He added, “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the agreement reached earlier this evening.”

Post-Ceasefire Escalations

Despite the ceasefire, Pakistani forces reportedly engaged in cross-border gunfire and shelling along the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC), targeting both civilian and military locations using drones. Incidents of mortar fire and small arms were reported from RS Pura, Akhnoor, and Nowshera in Rajouri district.

In Srinagar, residents reported multiple explosions shortly after nightfall, with air defence systems intercepting a drone near the strategically sensitive Batwara area. The sky lit up intermittently with illumination flares, as blasts occurred at intervals of approximately 15 minutes, triggering public alarm.

Similar drone activity was documented across the Kashmir Valley. In Baramulla, a drone was intercepted and neutralized around 8:20 PM, while another was downed at Anantnag high ground, close to a military post. Drone sightings were also reported in Verinag and Bandipora in Anantnag district, and in Safapora.

Late-night explosions were also heard in Jammu and Udhampur districts. Air raid sirens were activated across Jammu city, and some areas experienced temporary blackouts.

Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the ceasefire’s credibility on social media platform X. “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” he posted, later adding, “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!”

In Nagrota, a soldier sustained injuries during an encounter with an unidentified individual near the perimeter of a military facility, the White Knight Corps reported.

Regional Disruptions and Power Outages

Widespread blackouts were reported across Jammu and Kashmir — including Kathua, Kargil, Reasi, Baramulla, Srinagar, Firozpur, and Udhampur. While electricity was restored in most regions by early morning, alerts remained in place.

Blackout measures were also imposed in parts of Punjab and Rajasthan due to continued drone sightings. Punjab districts under alert included Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Pathankot, Patiala, Moga, Kapurthala, and Muktsar. In Rajasthan, Jaisalmer enforced a blackout, and Gujarat’s Kutch district reported drone activity near Harami Nala, Jakhau, and Khavda. Sirens were sounded in Bhuj, and a total blackout was declared in Kutch.

At 5:24 AM, the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar issued a public statement confirming power restoration, while urging residents to remain indoors amid ongoing red alert conditions.

Official Response and Strategic Outlook

During his late-night briefing, Foreign Secretary Misri stated that Indian armed forces have been given “a free hand” to respond decisively to any further provocations along the IB and LoC.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a counter-statement accusing India of violating the ceasefire, claiming its forces had been instructed to “act with restraint.” Observers noted that this response appeared to reflect growing dissonance between the Pakistani military and its civilian leadership.

Tensions escalated sharply after Indian forces launched precision strikes on Wednesday targeting terrorist launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under Operation Sindoor, in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which Indian officials linked to cross-border elements.

Since then, Pakistan has attempted multiple drone incursions and attacks on military and civilian targets along India's northern and western frontiers. The Indian government has reiterated that it is responding with firmness and will continue to do so as necessary.
