Chennai | May 28, 2025 — Actor and politician Kamal Haasan has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent comments on the origins of the Kannada language, asserting that his remarks were misinterpreted and spoken with affection, not malice.
In an interview with News18, Haasan clarified that he had no intention of offending any community. “My statement was misinterpreted,” he said. “What I expressed was born out of love, informed by conversations with several historians well-versed in linguistic history.”
Refusing to offer an apology, Haasan reiterated his stance: “I will not apologise for something that came from a place of love. Politicians, myself included, are not always the most qualified to comment on linguistic matters.”
The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder further emphasized Tamil Nadu’s longstanding legacy of inclusivity and cultural diversity. “Ours is a rare state where a Menon, a Reddy, and even a Kannadiga have served as Chief Ministers,” he noted.
Reflecting on his personal ties to Karnataka, Haasan recalled moments of solidarity during a turbulent period in Chennai. “Karnataka stood by me when I was facing challenges,” he said.
Commenting on his recent nomination to the Rajya Sabha by the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), Haasan pledged to be a voice for the people. “It will be your voice that I echo in Parliament,” he affirmed.
Haasan’s MNM officially joined the SPA in March 2024 ahead of the general elections, marking a strategic political alignment.
The controversy was triggered during the audio launch event of Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life in Chennai, where he remarked that “Tamil gave birth to Kannada.” The statement drew sharp criticism from various pro-Kannada groups, who viewed it as an affront to the Kannada language and culture. Some organisations even issued threats and launched protests in several cities, including Belagavi, Mysuru, Hubballi, and Bengaluru.
Earlier today, the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, a prominent pro-Kannada organisation led by Praveen Shetty, filed a formal police complaint in Bengaluru. The complaint alleges that Haasan’s comments hurt the sentiments of the Kannada-speaking community and fomented discord between Tamils and Kannadigas.
As tensions continue to escalate, Haasan’s remarks have sparked an ongoing debate about linguistic heritage, regional identity, and the responsibilities of public figures in culturally sensitive matters.
