Pakistan Seeks International Aid Amid Escalating Conflict with India

Islamabad – Following India’s swift retaliation to Pakistan’s military escalation on Thursday night, Pakistan appealed to the international community on Friday for financial assistance, citing “heavy losses inflicted by the enemy.” The Economic Affairs Division of the Pakistani government urged global partners to provide more loans and assist in de-escalating the intensifying conflict. In a post on X, the division stated, “Govt of Pakistan appeals to International Partners for more loans after heavy losses inflicted by enemy. Amid escalating war and stocks crash, we urge international partners to help de-escalate. Nation urged to remain steadfast.”

However, the Pakistani government later retracted the statement, claiming its X account had been hacked. The Ministry of Economic Affairs told Reuters it did not post the message, asserting the account was compromised. India’s Press Information Bureau responded by sharing a meme from the Hindi comedy film Golmaal, featuring the dialogue, “Yeh Koi Tarika Hai Bheek Mangne Ka (Is this the way to beg?),” mocking Pakistan’s appeal.

The developments follow India’s targeted strikes on Thursday night in Islamabad, Lahore, and Sialkot, in response to Pakistan’s unprovoked attacks along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border. Pakistan deployed over 50 drones targeting Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan, all of which were intercepted by India’s S-400 and Akash air defence systems, except for one that struck Jammu Civil Airport. Pakistan also violated the ceasefire along the LoC, shelling civilian areas and causing damage to buildings and livestock, prompting a proportional response from the Indian Army.

Economically, Pakistan has faced severe setbacks, with the Pakistan Stock Exchange suspending trading for an hour on May 8 after the benchmark index plummeted 7.2%, following India’s strikes on military targets in Lahore. Addressing the situation, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated during a joint press briefing with the armed forces, “Pakistan escalated the situation; we merely responded. The choice to de-escalate rests with Pakistan,” underscoring India’s stance amid the ongoing conflict.
