NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Tuesday apprehended a Pakistani national near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, amid rising cross-border tensions and increased security operations following a recent deadly terror attack in the region.
“A Pakistani national has been apprehended from the LoC in the Poonch sector,” an Army official confirmed. Further details regarding the identity of the individual and circumstances of the apprehension are yet to be disclosed.
The development comes in the aftermath of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a pony operator. It was among the deadliest attacks targeting civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in recent memory, prompting widespread condemnation and heightened alert across the valley.
Security has since been intensified across sensitive districts, particularly in Poonch and Rajouri, where additional checkpoints have been established and surveillance enhanced. Indian security forces remain on high alert amid ongoing ceasefire violations and small-arms fire exchanges initiated by Pakistani forces along the LoC.
The Government of India has directly linked the Pahalgam assault to cross-border elements and has pledged a robust response. On April 23, New Delhi announced a series of punitive measures against Islamabad, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, closure of the Attari land border crossing, and a downgrading of diplomatic relations.
In a retaliatory move, Pakistan shut its airspace to Indian aircraft and halted all trade with India, including indirect trade routed through third countries.
Tensions remain high as both nations brace for further diplomatic and security developments in the region.
