May 31, 2025 — Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has hailed Virat Kohli as one of the finest Test cricketers India has ever produced, stating that the former Indian skipper’s impact on the game extends far beyond statistics.
Speaking on the latest episode of ICC Review, Ponting reflected on Kohli’s illustrious Test career, which formally concluded ahead of the upcoming World Test Championship final beginning June 11. India, having failed to qualify for the summit clash after a 0–3 home series defeat to New Zealand and a 1–3 loss in Australia earlier this year, will be absent from the WTC final for the first time.
Ponting acknowledged a decline in Kohli’s numbers in recent years but asserted that his overall legacy remains unquestionable.
“He’s got to be right up there among the all-time greats,” Ponting said. “If we’re talking about Indian cricketers specifically, he’s right at the top. Yes, his numbers have dipped a bit over the last few years, but that doesn’t diminish the scale of his contribution.”
Kohli, who averaged above 50 for much of his career, retires with an average of 46.85 across 123 Tests, scoring 9,230 runs including 30 centuries. Of those Tests, he captained India in 68 matches, ushering in an era marked by intense competitiveness, world-class fitness standards, and an aggressive brand of cricket.
“He didn’t just play; he redefined the way India played Test cricket,” Ponting continued. “He brought in new energy, changed the fitness culture, and instilled a fearless approach. That rebranding of Indian cricket will be a huge part of his legacy.”
Kohli’s decision to step away from Test cricket was confirmed by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar during the announcement of India’s 18-member squad for the WTC final, now to be led by newly appointed captain Shubman Gill. Agarkar revealed that Kohli had informed the selectors early in the IPL 2025 season about his intent to retire from the longest format.
Ponting also pointed to the unique pressure faced by Indian players, noting that Kohli’s ability to thrive under intense public and media scrutiny further elevates his standing.
“What many from Australia or England might not fully grasp is the day-to-day pressure on Indian cricketers. To lead India, perform consistently, and transform the team culture under that level of expectation—it’s extraordinary. Kohli’s tenure as captain and player will be remembered for far more than just the runs he scored.”
With a Test career spanning over a decade, Kohli leaves behind a formidable legacy—one built not just on statistics, but on leadership, resilience, and a transformative influence on Indian cricket.
