New Delhi, June 20 — As tensions in West Asia escalate due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, Iran has confirmed it is working closely with Indian authorities to facilitate the safe evacuation of Indian nationals, particularly students stranded in the region.
Speaking to News18, Javed Hosseini, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi, said that three Mahaan Air flights have been arranged to repatriate Indian students in a phased manner.
“We are coordinating with Indian authorities in the evacuation efforts. Indian nationals were initially moved to safer locations, after which logistical support was provided for their return. Despite the closure of Iranian airspace, a special exemption has been granted to facilitate these flights,” Hosseini stated.
According to Iranian officials, approximately 10,000 Indian citizens are currently in Iran, including a significant number of students. Around 1,000 individuals have already been relocated to more secure areas as part of the evacuation process.
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, had earlier confirmed that he was in direct contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to ensure the safety and coordinated return of Indian citizens. Iranian diplomatic sources also emphasized that they are in ongoing communication with Indian officials to address safety concerns and operational logistics.
The evacuation flights are scheduled to operate from Mashaad to New Delhi in multiple phases. Additional batches of evacuees are expected to follow in the coming days.
The Iranian Embassy in India confirmed that these operations fall under the broader framework of Operation Sindhu, India’s organized initiative to repatriate its citizens from conflict zones. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that on June 17, 110 Indian students were evacuated from northern Iran via Armenia under diplomatic supervision, and subsequently flown from Yerevan to New Delhi.
“The Government of India places the highest priority on the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad,” the MEA said in an official statement. “We remain in close contact with all concerned parties and continue to monitor developments closely. Our embassies are actively engaged with the Indian community to provide all possible assistance.”
In addition to the Iranian evacuations, a separate special chartered flight is scheduled to bring back 56 Indian students from Turkmenistan at 3:00 AM tomorrow, as part of ongoing repatriation efforts.
With approximately 1,000 more students slated to return in the coming days, Indian authorities remain on high alert to ensure the secure and timely evacuation of citizens amid the volatile regional landscape.
