Tel Aviv, June 20 — Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has announced a directive to intensify military operations targeting Iranian regime infrastructure in Tehran, escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday, Katz declared, “We must strike all symbols of the regime and its mechanisms of oppression, such as the Basij, as well as the base of the regime’s power — the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).” He emphasized that the objective is to “destabilise” the Iranian regime through sustained and targeted military action.
The minister's remarks came shortly after a reported Iranian missile strike damaged Israel’s Soroka Medical Centre, prompting international concern. Addressing reporters in Holon, near Tel Aviv, Katz directly blamed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for authorizing attacks on civilian infrastructure.
“Khamenei openly declares that he wants Israel destroyed — he personally gives the order to fire on hospitals,” Katz said. “A dictator like Khamenei, who leads a regime with the destruction of Israel as its declared goal, cannot be allowed to continue to exist.”
Katz confirmed that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had been instructed accordingly, and that all strategic objectives, including regime decapitation, were now under operational consideration. “The IDF understands its mission clearly — eliminating those who pose an existential threat to the State of Israel is now a central objective,” he added.
The conflict between Israel and Iran has reached unprecedented levels since hostilities erupted eight days ago. On Thursday, Israeli forces targeted Iran’s Arak heavy-water nuclear reactor following prior evacuation warnings. In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes, one of which struck the hospital in Be’er Sheva, causing significant structural damage.
According to rescue officials, at least 47 people were injured in Thursday's Iranian attacks across southern Israel.
As both nations brace for further escalation, the international community is expressing mounting concern over the potential for regional destabilization, particularly as critical infrastructure and civilian targets continue to be drawn into the conflict.
