Ottawa, June 16 – French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump has extended a proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East.
“There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange,” Macron said at a press briefing during the G7 Summit in Canada. “An offer was made specifically to secure a ceasefire and initiate broader dialogue. We must now see whether the parties are willing to engage.”
However, the diplomatic initiative appeared to lose momentum when a senior U.S. official later stated that President Trump would not endorse a draft G7 statement calling for de-escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict.
In a dramatic turn, President Trump cut short his participation at the summit, departing a day early on Monday. His exit came as the Israel-Iran confrontation intensified, with the U.S. president issuing a stark warning that Tehran should be "evacuated immediately."
The summit, convened in Canada with the aim of addressing pressing global challenges, was overshadowed by rising concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the expanding Israeli air campaign. Israel launched its offensive four days ago, targeting multiple nuclear-related sites inside Iranian territory.
Speaking at the summit, President Trump reiterated the urgency of halting Iran’s nuclear program, warning that time was running out. “They have to make a deal,” he said. “Iranian leaders have had 60 days to come to the table, and they didn’t—now they face consequences.”
Pressed on whether the United States was considering direct military involvement, Trump declined to elaborate, saying only, “I don’t want to talk about that.”
Israeli airstrikes have so far struck several key Iranian facilities but have not succeeded in neutralizing the heavily fortified Fordo uranium enrichment site. The underground facility, buried deep beneath mountainous terrain, may only be vulnerable to the U.S.-developed GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator—a 30,000-pound bunker-busting bomb capable of destroying deeply embedded targets.
The prospect of expanded conflict continues to draw concern from international observers, as diplomatic efforts face growing uncertainty in the wake of heightened military activity and shifting U.S. engagement.
