Man Arrested in UK Over Costa del Sol Double Murder of Two Scots

LONDON/FUENGIROLA – A 44-year-old man has been arrested in the United Kingdom in connection with the fatal shooting of two Scottish nationals in Spain earlier this month.

Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan

The victims, Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan, were gunned down outside Monaghan’s Bar in the coastal town of Fuengirola, located on Spain’s Costa del Sol. The attack occurred late at night when a masked assailant exited a vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Both men were pronounced dead on site.

On Friday, officers from Merseyside Police, acting on behalf of the Spanish authorities, detained the suspect in the Liverpool area. The arrest was carried out in coordination with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and its National Extradition Unit.

In a statement issued Saturday, the NCA confirmed:

“On Friday, June 13, officers from Merseyside Police arrested a 44-year-old man in the Liverpool area on behalf of the Spanish authorities on suspicion of two counts of murder. The operation was supported by officers from the NCA’s National Extradition Unit.”

The suspect appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, June 14, for the commencement of extradition proceedings. He has been remanded in custody pending further legal action.

Spanish authorities are leading the investigation into the double homicide, with support from UK law enforcement agencies where necessary.

Police Scotland, in a statement released following the incident, emphasized that there is currently no evidence to link the Fuengirola shootings with the wave of gang-related violence being investigated under Operation Portaledge, which has seen over 40 arrests across Glasgow and Edinburgh since March.

“There is no intelligence to suggest that the deaths of these two men in Spain are connected to recent criminal incidents in Scotland,” a Police Scotland spokesperson stated. “The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being led by Spanish police. Police Scotland is providing assistance where requested, but no officers are currently deployed to Spain.”

Authorities also warned against speculation, noting that unfounded claims could hinder ongoing investigations in both jurisdictions.

Operation Portaledge remains focused on a series of gangland incidents in Scotland, including shootings, firebombings, and assaults.
